Few newbie questions

jsc230 Dec 29, 2004 11:20 PM

I'd liketo get a mossy uroplatus (scientific name escapes me now). Anyways, I have a healthy leopard gecko, so i'm not new to reptiles (well not completely). In a while (probably about 2 years) I definately would like to add a uroplatus to my collection. Are they hard reptiles to keep? Personally I feel my leo couldn't be easier to keep.

Also what would be theprice in USD for a nice mossy uroplatus?

Any other info you'd liketo add would be appriciated. Oh andi have read afew caresheets, but likei said probably be a while till i havethe space/money to actually get one.

Joe

Well, for a mossy (U. sikorae) that is Cbb, you will have to wait a while I imagine. I am currently unaware of anyone that has any young ones for sale. A few things that you should know. Uroplatus while docile in nature, are a bit jumpy. They like to be high up vertically, and while holding one, will quite suddently jump from your hand. Though most of the time I can tell when mine are getting ready to jump. They are considerably more delicate than a leopard gecko (having owned that species a few times), both in husbandy, and in handling. Their humidity requirements are a bit different even between other Uroplatus species. Unlike leopard geckos, they don't drink from standing water, misting them directly definitely aids in inducing them to drink. And they don't require high temperatures either which makes it easy in keeping them in my opinion.

Cost (USD): 110-150 dollars depending upon who is selling, REMEMBER this..any person knowledgeable in Uroplatus, won't sell you a hatchling, they should be selling you an animal that is well started (3-4months old).

I am definitely not an expert, I read a lot, and listen to people here w/far more experience than myself. But I love this genus, and this particular species of Uroplatus.

Availability: Henkeli far easier to come by than mossys.
