newbie, and have questions about my pacman frog

josiahatteberry Dec 30, 2004 01:15 AM

i just got him and the pet store said bed-a-beast bedding was good and that an undertank heater on the back of the tank instead of under was good, but when i mist the frog the substrate is cold and im afraid he will get too cold, also ive only had him for 2 days but he hasnt eaten yet, i offered him crickets but he wont take them so i was wondering if anyone could offer me some help with these questions and just some general advice, thank you so very much

It will take him a few days to adjust to his new surroundings. My second pac took almost a week before he decided to eat and my last pac I just got took a few minutes after I first put him in his cage. Every pac is different. Bed a beast is a good substrate and the uth on the back of the tankworks as well. If you feel it is still cold, you might try a low wattage bulb above his tank. Too high of a wattage and you run the risk of cooking him.

thanks, if anyone could help i was also wondering about how deep should the substrate be? and since he is still young i was wondering if i should be feeding him crickets or if there are some other options that would be better?

A stable diet for packmans should consist of crickets of a reasonable size and earth worms, even wax worms are great for younger froglets. Your substrait layer should be about 2-3 inches deep, so your frog can fully cover himself and burrow, remember your frog burrows to excape the heat or in other cases the cold.

Bed a beast is great and so is any other types of coco fyber. As for the under tank heater, I stroungly suggest that you do not use one, for example, your frog most likly, when it burrows, will go down under the substait onto the glass bottum, therefore if the glass is hot enouph it will burn his stomach. I sugest buying a cheap small 8 inch dome lighting fixture whith a zoo-med 40 watt. daylight blue buld for heat. I have used it with my pixies and packmans for years and I have never had problems. Good luck with your new frog.

You can also use rosey reds as the calcium and protien in the minnows are good for growth. The occasional pink is fine also.
With any substrate that can be consumed it is always better to feed the frog via tweezers to prevent impaction.
