Species and number of fertile clutches per female/yr you are observing??

viper69 Dec 30, 2004 04:50 AM

Being very new to the breeding scene. I would very curious to see how many fertile eggs people are seeing per female of a given species in a single 12 month cycle on average

SECOND, I am also curious, how often can a female Uroplatus breed?? I would think the more she breeds, the more likely she is to die earlier due to the stress put on her body

The observed norm for an established, proven, female is 5-6 clutches per breeding season. Average clutch size is two eggs, but four is not that uncommon. My female henk has yet to lay a clutch of more than one egg. My two hypotheses are; 1. it's her first breeding season. 2. She didn't get the "prolific breeding gene". (Don't quote me on that last one, purely a figment of my imagination).

It varies, I have a female henk that will lay a couple infertiles to start up, then on avg an infertile and a fertile and then fertiles from there on out... I think it takes the male a little bit to catch up in that case... On the contrary, in one season, I have had a female henk lay all fertiles, including a four egg clutch... There are a million other factors (environment, compatibility, fitness, age, ect ect) but it depends on the specimens (male and female)...

Hey, I have one pair of henkeli as a side project. They are doing so well that I will try to buy more and make them my main project(next to ball pythons ofcoarse). She lays every 2-3 weeks, 2 perfect round eggs. She weighs at 76 grams and eats pinkys! her mate weighs at 73 grams(still growing though) and also likes pinkys. A few TRICKS are humidity, humidity, and always keep food in them!! I cant even beleive that I have said those, as there are more but just do trial and error! What are the weights of you females??? Dont let them lose any weight when breeding!! ERIk

Weight, hmm..I don't know...The female is definitely slightly longer, and she's physically larger than the male. My male has that slender look, while the female is quite rounded past the front legs. Her dorsal surface is more curved as is her lateral sides, suggesting she has eggs in my opinion. But I could be wrong there..as she's the first female reptile I have owned. I do not think she has lost any weight, as she's a voracious eater. Eats right in front of me, and always eats. But w/out weighing her, I wouldn't know.

Crap where could I get a scale at a reasonable to weigh??

I got mine from scales and I use it for everything I own! from cresteds to ball pythons. I take weights every 20 days, and write the weights on there card. It tells me if they are lossing weight or gaining or staying the same! ERIk

type in digital, or jewelers scales for a search on ebay.
for under 20 dollars you can get a scale that should max around 275 g and is accurate to within .1 or .2 G.
or you can get one that is quite accurate up to 35 lbs that people use for determining shipping charges.
i got one and have been very pleased with the quality and accuracy.
