I'm kinda curious about that myself-but Pete Kahl has always had better prices than anywhere else, oddly enough.

and seem to be the most willing to part with their money for some hyped crap.
I thought those were the ball python people?
The remark above was loosely aimed at a couple of people I know that also breed BP's(I'm always giving them a hard time about it!
) let me just say I have nothing against BP's,it's just that if you think there are inconsistencies, based on huge leaps of faith in the boa market...ooops,there I go again...I love BP's,and, respect those that put forth the effort to raise and, breed them! *lol* "there" that's what I wanted to say!
I guess I'm gullible.

There's a difference between Reptile hobbyists, reptile purists
and people who want to be a "Bi-nis Man"...
To be fair to both sides, obviously when you approach something
as a hobby, or passion and when you plan for something as a
business there is a huge difference in atty-tude...
"Don't believe the hype!!!"
... because the breeders of such animals are such hard working guys and that has to be rewarded.

Beware of Commies and Mutts!
I have 3 BCI redtails that I love dearly, and I take care of them to the best of my knowledge also what I learn and read here. However and am curious on this "SUCH HARD WORK"???? I'm mean for my 3 RT. I (1) feed them,(2)clean water (3) clean cage (4) handle them. And make sure temps are always good. Well,...... From what I've been reading in past posts the "cleaning of the cage and the Handling them part is out..." So could u please clarify this "such hard work"Because to me it's not. I wouldn't have them if I thought they were to much "work"for me .
Sorry if that offense anyone.

Or,so...Then get back to us!*lol* three? yeah,I'll bet that's a walk in the park!(with one around your neck,no doubt?) as with any endeavor,it depends on your level of involvement, and, commitment! as to the original question about the standardization of prices...or,"market pricing",it all depends on the quality of the animals used to produce the mutation in question, doesn't it? I mean,is this such a "hard" thing to grasp???? I can find "hypos" for $350 ea....but,personally,I don't want those...I can find albinos for $850 ea....but,personally,I don't want those either! If your goal is to buy the cheapest you can find...go for it!your collection, and, the subsequent offspring you produce, will likely reflect that... if your taste demands the very best, you'll probably have to spend more than the "market price"?...maybe the person selling them has an unrealistic idea of their value!?,or,maybe they're a cut above the rest!?...instead of crying about it,email the guy, and,ASK HIM/HER,and,go from there???
I keep forty breeders/future breeders between my boas and my corns and yes I but in a lot of hard work, but it is a labor of love. I have been keeping reptiles for over 20 years now and I have worked my collection up from just a few animals. I have paid cash for very few of my animals, call me cheap or old fashion but most of the animals I have I traded for over the years, or kept my own offspring. My Striped Boas bred out of a Normal breeding of a Colombian and Central American Boas, neither exceptional looking animals, I did buy my Salmontine from Mike and Steph last year but that is one of the few that I have bought. My albino and hets were all trade, as well as my Ghost Hets. I worked hard to get the snakes that I want, but I did it as the hobby use to be, trading and swapping animals. I have to feed my family long before I spend $2,000.00 on anything and I will not go into hock for a snake either. I am not knocking those who do, It just takes the fun out of it for me. Breeding and trade top end morphs is just part of the hobby. Now if I could only breed something that Jeremy Stone would be interested in so I could get one of those Motley Boas. But I can wait a few more years I guess.
Thanks

I think the price people place on their animals reflects how motivated they are to sell them. For instance, if you have an animal you want to sell but you would not mind keeping it then you will probably want top dollar... know what I mean? Now if you have an animal that you do not want anylonger for whatever reason... (such as no room, you have others like it, no longer interested in that project, need cash fast, etc) you price that animal better. You will price it to move fast!
That's the way it is with me. I also figure that some animals will appreciate in value as time goes by, especially Ball Pythons. So what's the rush?

First off, the economy isn't that bad for lots of people. This is nothing like the Great Depression, where starvation was a real issue for many. Yes, I know Unemployment is at a 9 year high. But things like interest rates are at record lows. I'm refinancing my home mortgage and getting a rate that's a 30 year low! So if you are someone like me, with steady employment and a mortgage, things are as good as they can get.
Second, snake breeding is more successful today than it has ever been. Folks can sell an entire clutch of baby *whatever* species and spend all the profit on a single pair of snakes.
Now I don't claim to understand why someone would spend as much as they will for whatever morph of whatever species. I'd personally rather spend money on a rare species than a morph of an easily bred species... but that's just me.
Anyway... just my 2 pennies worth.
