I am getting a Northern Water Snake. Currently, he (she?) is about 7-8 in long. I am looking for information about the care of these snakes.
First, what is the best thing to feed and how much should I be feeding a snake of this size? How often? Right now, he's eating small fish.
What is the appropriate size tank for now? How big will it need to be for an adult? What should I use for a substrate? I know they need a water bowl. How deep should it be? Do these snakes climb at all? Does he need a hide box? How should I provide heat? Is a heating pad or a heat lamp better? What temp?
How easy are these snakes to handle? Should I try to handle him a little bit regularly to make things like cleaning the cage easier? Or would he rather be left alone?
