feeding chunks of meat? (a bit long)

andywalker Dec 30, 2004 05:50 PM

hey, i recently picked up a baby spec. caiman, just about 10 inches. before that, i had an approx. 3 foot dwarf that would only eat live prey, so this new guy is a bit of a new opportunity. i know some people feed chunks of beef and chicken to their caimans, to avoid live prey.. i've tried a couple beef chunks, and some chicken with this little guy, and wow hes got a heck of a feeding response! now my question is, are there certain kinds of meat, or certain cuts i should focus on (or more importantly, stay away from)??. i know the value of feeding whole prey, and i certainly intend to maintain a varied diet for this guy.. anyways, thats about it, thanks guys, appreciate the help
andy.

feeding chunks of meat to your caiman is not a problem at all. The only thing that I would suggest is to make sure to use some kind of supplement with it. Calcium powder and multivitamin would be ideal. I have 9 caiman myself and do exactly that. All of mine are perfectly healthy. With the chicken, just make sure to get chicken without perservatives. The chemicals in the chicken used to prolong shelf life is not good for them. It wont hurt them every now and then, but not on a regular basis. For more info, you can go to my website and read up on caimans.
