(disclaimer: I am no expert but...)

Hog Island boas are an island boa species that are believed to be extinct. Hogs have a naturally hypomelanistic look to them but its not co-dominant. They are a little smaller and often have extreme color variances between day/night. With Hogs, you must be careful if you want a pure hog b/c some people outcross them with columbian boas to increase morph potentials. While this doesn't bother some people, it could impact the purity of true hogs in captivity if this fact is not openly disclosed upon purchasing an outcrossed hog.

Salmons are a co-dominant form of hypomelanism in columbian boas. They get larger than hogs and are co-dominant. Salmons increase in coloration with every shed but I'm not sure about the variances in color changes between night/day like seen in hogs. Salmons are also more expensive. Price ranges from $300 on up...with most being on the upper end of the price range (closer to $1000). Hogs are about $225 or more depending on who/where you get it from.

Nice thing about each is you are almost 100% certain to get captive bred either way you go. Finding either as wild caughts would be like hiting the lottery I guess.

Someone please correct me if I posted any wrong info.

I am trying to understand what you typed so correct me if I'm misunderstanding a question or statement. I bought a pair of Hogs from John Yocum/Zoo-otics and my 2nd female is from Paul Mitchell/PMHerps. Paul is located in NJ I think. If you know someone selling hogs and you've bought from them before, then I would highly suggest going back to your original source IF you were satisfied. For instance, if I wanted another Hog, I would go straight to the two breeders I mentioned previously and try to get one from them first. But thats just me.

I went to the NARBC show this past November and there were alot of people selling Salmons and Hypos. Not too many Hogs for sale at that particular show but you could probably find a great number of people selling quality hogs online. I personally like the natural variations of ALL snake species so I'm a little more inclined to recommend Hogs but I recently fell in love with Salmons and recently purchased one and waiting for cold weather and holidays to pass before I receive her.

ps...my website is very out of date w/ respect to pics... I have to really update things BUT i don't have the time right now to do so, especially since I'm finishing off a herp room.

All "Real Salmon's" came from the same Breeder Rich Ihle, all True Salmon's came from his Livestock. Rich Ihle has produced and sold alot of Salmon's since he originated this Line of Hypo's, so there are alot of Breeder's working with this line of Hypo's, the Female he used in "The Salmon Project" is believed to be Central American/Panama. At the top of this page on the Boa Forum, were it say's This Forum Sponsored by, click on SalmonBoa.Com, on there web-site click on Articles, you can read the Article, Rich Ihle wrote, and was in Reptiles Magazine called "The Salmon Boa Project". If your looking for Hog Island Boa's the Breeder I got this one from might have some left ! Check it out at www.classreptilia.com these are Pure Sear's Line Hog's, Good Luck in your search, Take Care !
