Mouse size for juvenile Texas rat snake

dewittg Dec 30, 2004 07:56 PM

A Texas rat snake showed up on my front porch a few weeks ago. Literally, I was leaving for lunch and found him on my porch. It was 50 F at the time and night time temperatures were running around freezing. Surprising that he was out and about, albeit moving very slowly.

He's about 14" and eating large (2.5 gram) pinkies easily. I think he should be able to handle smallish fuzzies though the largest ones might be a tad big for him. Rather than paying pet store prices, I'm considering purchasing mice mail orders but he is my only snake. Since I would need to buy in quantities of at least 50, I'm thinking about purchasing large pinkies and feed 2 at a time if needed so I can go through them in a reasonable period of time. I'm also considering purchasing 50 fuzzies (vacuum packed) at the same time figuring that they'll keep in my freezer for 6 months or so.

Does that make sense?

Another try for the picture that didn't work the first time.

At that size, I wouldn't switch to fuzzies yet. I would go with the two pinks at a time so that if it only wants one, it has that choice. Great snake, by the way.
