Questions about my Green Tree Frog

treesofmachinery Dec 30, 2004 10:53 PM

I've had Chicken Tikki Masala for about 3.5 months. He was tiny, less than an inch I'd say when I first got him and has grown to about 2 inches. He is set up in a 5 gallon "cube", where two sides are mesh which I covered with plastic wrap to keep in the humidity. Now here are my problems.

1) he seems to have a sore on the tip of his nose. I don't what it could be from except maybe rubbing against the metal mesh? Is there anything I can do about this?

2) When we first got him I could hand feed him 3 dusted crickets a night. Now he will hardly take one undusted cricket from my hand. Is it just that he needs to be fed only ever other night?

3) He has started bark. Constantly. Loudly. During the middle of the night. If I was to get a female would this stop his behavior? Or lessen it?

4) Some times he is a very pale green and sometimes a very dark green. Does this mean anything?

Whew.. ohkie and i'll also add a pic of him. Thanks.

Hey there. I'm not the best about frogs, but I do know an awful lot about the Cuban Tree Frog, so let's see if I can just shed some light.

First off, it's wintertime. He may be eating less because he is cold. Check his temps. But three crickets a night for a two inch froggy IS a lot, try every other night. It must be great to be able to hand feed your baby! Lucky!

As for the barking, I'm really not sure. I know that the only time my males every barked was because they heard the others outside (they're wild caught) or because they want to mate. If you wanna get him a mate, I'd say go for it! But maybe get him a 10 gallon first, and then quarentine her in the 5 gallon for a month or two.

Alright, as for the sore on his nose... I actually lost a frog due to this. I don't want to scare you but it's true, he slammed his nose into the glass so much that he got an open sore, it got infected before I could do anything, and he passed away. This was before I knew how to really care for them though. I happen to be treating Beady for a fungal infection right now, and here is what I am doing for the open sore:

Soak your frog in a 2% solution of water and mercuroclear (formally known as mercurochrome). Do this for five minutes once a day. I'm also applying a drop or two of the mercuroclear directly onto his sore with a tiny paintbrush. (it's actually a brush for lipliner that I bought)
Antibiotic Ointment should work well, too. But the above is recommended.

I think I covered everything in your post, if not feel free to e-mail me.

Where do I buy this stuff? I am actually going into my reptile store today and getting my first White's Tree Frogs so I can ask them too. Thanks for the advice.

I love Cubans. DO you have any pics of yours? We are planning to set up a 40 gallon viv. for some Cubans. The ones they had at the shop were HUGE and only like 6.99 a piece.

You can buy all of those things at any pet store, especially the reptile ones.

And yes I have TONS of pictures of my Cubans.

Here's their Christmas picture.

Hi, I have had GTF for quite a while. I would say all the barking is from the weather change, and all the humidity, try lowering the humidity, and see if that helps. Dont you think a 5 gallon is sort-of small? Good luck!

Actually, when I got the little guy he was barely done being a tadpol so 5 gallons was good for him. He has grown quite a lot, so today actually I went and bought a new tank. It's a 10 gallon tall hex. I also bought him a girlfriend since the people at the petstore said GTF are communal frogs. The new tank is really cool. What size do you keep your GTF in?

(See how small he is! hehe... so adorable)
