tegu cage

xruthlessx76 Dec 31, 2004 09:37 AM

for a tegu cage with doors on the front, would it be best to use 1/4" hardware cloth or glass in the doors, if glass then what would be the best way to get enough air flow, if hardware cloth then has anyone had any bad experience with this? scratching nose against it or anything
thanks

Screening used low in an enclosure may cause issues with scale abrasion, nail damage, etc. I would use an acyrlic, like Plexiglass(tm), or something easier to cut and drill like Lexan(tm).

You can cut a hole almost anywhere in the enclosure for ventalation and cover it with a wire mesh, but generally this is done higher up in the enclosure.

I hope this helps.

Wouldn't the Plexi get all scratched up if it was low in the enclosure? Wouldn't glass be better if he wants to be able to see through the cage? In on of my beardeds enclosures I have Plexi-glass fronts and they got severely scratched up you can't even look through them, imagine what a tegu would do! I need the help here too, I'm building a cage for Morpheous.

Thanks!

Plexiglass(tm) would scratch over a period of time, but it's not expensive to change it one in awhile. I always avoid glass because a large tegu flipping a rock or bowl around an enclosure can easily break a glass door unless you use thicker glass then what most people seem to buy for small applications.

This is just my opinion based on my experiances.

I used 1/2 inch hardware cloth on my outside enclosure. The only drawback was tegus will climb and hang from their front legs.

For indoor ventilation I used the thicker pegboard. It provides lots of air flow.
