Need advice on purchase...

thesaj Dec 31, 2004 10:58 AM

Greetings,

I am looking to purchase a snake...

I am looking for the following characteristics:

1) arboreal (tank is geared toward it and I find it extremely eye pleasing to see a snake coiled on a branch)
2) good temperement (i'd like something I can handle)
3) smaller the better (I have a W30"xH24"xD12" glass tank with vented mesh sides...actually a chameleon tank...I'd love a specimen that could live in such as an adult or at least for the first chunk of it's adult life. )
4) interesting pattern (I prefer the brighter patterns, this is why I find the common reddish corn snake very attractive, as well as these specimens recently posted http://forums.kingsnake.com/view.php?id=672090,672090 )

Any suggestions. I've been considering a carpet python. Or possibly a corn snake. I love the standard orange/reddish corn snake, and they're more about the size I am looking for but they're not really arboreals. I do understand females get larger than males. Is there a way to tell if a carpet is a male?

My local pet store only has a greyish black and white carpet. Are there breeders online that sell specimens? I see several types of species of carpets. Are any known to be smaller than others?

Will Leary (Reptilicus Reptiles), Anthony Caponetto, VPI, Yasser (spitfire Reptiles), There are a lot of other smaller breeders, however these breeders produce amazing babies. Id suggest you not buy it from your petstore, you will pay too much and not get good quality. If you chose to buy from a private breeder, or a major breeder (examples above) you will not be disappointed, I have 1.2 coastals right now and there SImply amazing and When i bought them i had no intention on ever buying carpets i went to the show to get a new ball and saw some very eye catching snakes and bought them and since then Ive loved them, Morelia family as a whole is a very nice group of animals.

a breeder would be the way to go. although i bought my JCP at a local reptile store and she is great. but they get to big for a tank your talking about. i am more concerned about your tank with mesh sides. i think that would be hard to keep heat and humidity in for a snake but i'm not an expert.
