I am a Blood Python Newbie, any advice?

snakepimp Dec 31, 2004 05:24 PM

I just purchased , today, my first pair of Red Bloods.
I have kept many reptiles, for over 20 years, and I have produced hundreds of colubrids, and am trying my hands at breeding boas this year.
I just got them, so I am not yet posting pictures.
I have them both in a heated sweater box rack: cool end 79-80, and warm end 92-94. they have a tight fiting hide-box at each end, and water in the middle. I have a Ranco-controlled room temperature that runs from 78-83 deg f. which I cycle DTH and NTL. I have an ultrasonic room humidiier, which maintains humdidty between 50%-70%. I think they are pretty well set up.
The female is hatchling sized, and the male is probably pushing 1000 grams and is about 1 year old.
I got the pair at a pet shop for $160 total, and the male is a stunner! not really RED, but REALLY orange. the price could not be beat, and they were CB by a local fellow here in Boise ID.
What is a viable breeding weight for a female, and how long should it take to achieve this weight?
How the heck do you tell if a blood is getting obese? They all look corpulent to me!
I will take pictures next week, after they have settled in a bit.

Of course it's my opinion, I said it, didn't I?

I'm glad you got into the wonderful world of blood pythons !!!You don't know me but I own some B.C.C.'s.Suri's and Guyana.I always post my boa's,however NOBODY,I mean NOBODY ever replie's.I guess the OLDER and WISER BOA GODS are too busy to look.I've seen some of your boa's and you have a great looking collection.Your set up sounds good.Don't let the temps drop past 80 on the cool end and I suggest that you put a large water bowl in the enclosure to ensure humidity cause young bloods tend to dry out quickly. One humid hide and one dry hide is also good.Other than that you sound good.Orange bloods are great cause they will turn reder as adults .Here's my male blood that was a yellow/orange as a yearling and now turning reder two years latter.Bloods can breed three to four yrs old.Good Luck.

That's cool,I have seen your name over there.
I know what you mean about the BOA GODS over there. Some of the Good Ol' Boys get pretty intense on that forum.
I like the idea of one humid, and one dry hide.
I think I will move my baby girl over to the shoebox rack, so she feels more secure.
I really feel like my humidity in the room will be fine. I am really excited about breeding them.
I am interested to see the color change happen.
New snakes are so fun, and I have a good feeling about the Python curtus and brongersmai group.
