would he die, if he didn't hibernate? i have an indoor 20 gallon tank right now, can anyone tell me what is a good indoor set up for the winter for him to hibernate in?

Where are you that you are considering keeping your boxturtle indoors for the winter?
There are ways of hibernating them indoors, and I'm adding a link to Tess Cook's website that not only has great information on why turtles should hibernate, but her site provides a link on how to do it in a controlled indoor environment.

a 20 gallon tank? That's barely suitable for a newly hatched box turtle the size of a thumbnail. An adult should have a large outdoor pen, and New York State is within the natural range of the species, so a suitably built pen can have a hibernation spot provided for winters.
