Where are you that you are considering keeping your boxturtle indoors for the winter?
There are ways of hibernating them indoors, and I'm adding a link to Tess Cook's website that not only has great information on why turtles should hibernate, but her site provides a link on how to do it in a controlled indoor environment.

well i live in newyork. i dunno if i want him to hibernate.
a 20 gallon tank? That's barely suitable for a newly hatched box turtle the size of a thumbnail. An adult should have a large outdoor pen, and New York State is within the natural range of the species, so a suitably built pen can have a hibernation spot provided for winters.
