Best breeder to get Russians or Greeks?

SteveISU Jan 01, 2005 02:34 PM

Ok....I've decided to get either a russian or greek tortoise. I was looking for some suggestions as to where many have gotten theirs. I have everything needed interms of housing and such. I just don't want to get one from Petco. So any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Steve

Steve, at which "I" State University are you?

I was most fortunate to be able to purchase my captive-bred Russians locally.
This time of year shipping may/can be hazardous to the life of a shipped animal. No one selling is going to admit that their shipping methods are less than perfect! When I have received animals via courier during warm weather, I've been impressed with how sloppy the packaging has been.

Local purchase is soooo much better! Do you have any herp clubs in your area? They may know of local breeders!
Check out,

Best of luck! Speaking for my self, Russians are awesome!

Illinois State U....although I graduated in 03 with my masters.

We do have some local shows, which I went to today. But I was less than impressed with what was available (a given since it is January). I have researched a couple torts and have narrowed it down to a Russian or Eastern Hermann. I know Rept-titudes has one E. Hermann.

Great! Those folks sound truly professional and, more important, caring!

Their insistence on using Delta rather than overnight is reassuring!

Good luck with your Hermann! Next Spring, maybe a Russian!

hi steve,

there is a list of russian tortoise breeders at:

http://www.russiantortoise.org

the message board is frequented by many who can attest to the caring nature of many of the breeders there. most will consider shipping in the spring, it's a little too risky now.

good luck,

matt
