I live in New Jersey and cannot find many pet stores that have any large constrictors. I have only found 2 that have burms. No retics or anacondas. Has anyone else had similar experiences. I don't mind ordering snakes, but it is just more of a hassle. Also, I was wondering how fast male anacondas grow, I have one and have been heavily feeding it and want to know how big it will be after a year or 2. Any feedback with regards to either topic is greatly appreciated

well being its has bin illegal to sell anacondas in new jersey for the past 3 years now i would think it be hard to find one. it also gose in to affect today jan 1 2005 anacondas are illegal to own and are on the potentional dangerious species list. my male green will be a year old in a couple days and he is at 6 feet. most petstores no longer sell large snakes becouse to many kids buy them and what not and its easyer for them to sell royals, red tails and colubrids then retics and burms. i have worked in many pet stores over the years and more money is made on smaller snakes then bigger ones. most people seems to relize the big size of these animals and tend to stick away.

Thanks for the info. About those laws, that sucks. I understand though, how pet stores don't carry big snakes. Especially when they get big and no one wants them, they would have to take care of a costly and hard to manage snake.

there passing a bunch of other stupid laws as well such as the "pocket pet law" to sum it up u need to have another permit to keep animals that u could keep in ur pocket for public safety. i have not seen the whole list yet but on it there are hedgehogs, tegus, and monitors. my question to the people who made the law is not why they made it but who can keep a hedgehog, tegu or monitor in there pocket?
its mainly becouse fish and game was taken over by a new department and everything is going crazy-go-nuts. but aslong as u have ur permits for ur animals u will be ok.
by the way did u get ur permits yet this year i mailed the forms in november and have yet to get the permits yet it normally takes a week?

Hmmm, maybe you should try contacting them to see why you haven't gotten them yet. I don't know why there would be such a delay.

i have tryed contacting them but i have better chances at contacting life on another planet then them.

are these laws in effect in all states? I live in MD and am not aware of any laws or regulations concerning any of the animals I own such as large constrictors and monitors. Is there a good sight which gives you info on new laws concerning herps?

CrazyCodyKadunk Jan 01, 2005 10:29 PM

no its just for new jersey and new york if u look up ur states fish and game web site or give them a call they will send some thing out to u. i have books on all the states laws. it looks like up until 2004 u could not release animals in to the wild or take animals from the wild or keep crocs or any venimous reptiles or turtles but it is a new year and there are new laws so u should give them a call and they should send u out a booklet on ur states laws.
