hypo flame brooks female

daveb Jan 01, 2005 04:09 PM

- here is my choice for my first pic of the new year. she's a year and a half and a wee bit feisty. i was doing some mid brumation cleaning and since all was quiet decided to take a few pics. this pic is the one that survived.
she is closing in on 30" and weighs about 300 g +/-. she's a real dream come feeding time, thank good ness for 18" hemostats. with any luck she may breed in 2006.

i was doing some mid brumation poop scooping and took some pics. not the best light ( fluorescent) but you get the idea. this is a female from the trio of white phase brooks i got from brandon several years ago. she is above my 40"/ 400g breeding cutoff but i will probably wait a year until she is closer in size to her potential boyfriend(s) and has completed her pattern/color changes, and looking like her big momma. thank you mr. osborne, this is a fantastic line of kings with a ton of potential.

WOW! Those are beautiful. I am in Texas and the weather is unseasonably mild so I too was changin water and checking on snakes. I should've snapped some pics but man they wanted to eat! Found 3 shed skins too. I can't wait for spring, looking forward to seeing everyones babies, including my own of course. ttyl Tom Stevens

it has been mild to warm here in Miami , im tempted to feed the critters(the Kings and Milks and corns) they are mostly awake but a chill could be bad for digestion ,we had a freeze warning so i brought in my blue tegu pair and my beardeds but now its warm and are moving around soon as i put em out side again i worry about the January fronts!!btw they have no water Beardies dont drink from a bowl and the tegus are lil dinosaurs and are sleeping in DRY shredded newspaper but latly they have been rustiling around any thoughts on the feed thing. I wouldn't feed. That is unless any animal seemed unhealthy. If I found an emaciated snake during brumation I would warm him up, feed him, and keep him awake. I think it's a bad idea to feed even 1 small food item during brumation. I don't know anyone who does. Tom Stevens

i have loved the brooksi/floridana "complex" since i first saw them in the peterson's field guide, still have my first male, you'll have to pry him from my cold dead hands. for $25 or $500, easily one of the most impressive snakes in our hobby based on a million and one reasons - rat crusher, 6' sewer pipe, color, personality, you name it. and in any morph- normal hypo axanthic etc- one of the very few snakes that looks better as an adult than as a hatchling. never a dull moment in the kingsnake room, God bless 'em.

So true Dave. I have four 03 females. 3 normals and 1 het for Peanut Butter. Every one is different looking and I have a feeling 5 other 04 babies I have which are hets will look different from each other as adults too. I have some morphs and I am actually working on some very cool double het stuff but that's a good 2 or 3 years from now. Regardless I love Brooksi and I am glad they're popular. Tom Stevens

I was just given a two year old brooks that looks just like your white phase brooks, with just a shade more green. Can you tell me what you would call this phase or local? What will they look like when they finish their ontogenetic color change? And what did they look like as babys? I'll post a few pictures. Thanks,

will she loose the green tint? What would I breed with her to get a high white looking phase, if possible?
Thanks again!!!!!

She looks a lot like my `02 male. I'm not sure if they lighten up any more than that but i have a younger 2x het. "green" female that is starting to light up, all my Brooksi start out very dark (as i think all "normals" do) and within a year they become very "speckled" the female in the pic is an `03.
as far as breeding your female to something to produce a white phase i don't think that is possible, i think you would need to breed white phase to white phase inorder to produce white phase offspring (i'm not sure so don't quote me).

So mine would be considered, a Green Phase Florida King? Will it turn more yellow as they get older?

Thanks for the info.

what you have there is a "normal" florida king. i'm not an expert on local, but as far as i undestand the lighter florida kings are from south florida. as far as she turning completely yellow, i really don't think so, you may wanna consider getting a hypo male if a yellow snake is what you are looking for.

ZFelicien Jan 02, 2005 03:17 PM

they are refered to by some breeder as being "green" because they look greenish, but to call um green phase will kinda be much.

thomas davis Jan 04, 2005 12:02 PM

nice looking fla.king, but you really shouldnt feed it on that substrate(walnut)even 1 kernal of that stuff ingested will cause death very bad stuff to feed on imho, also unnatural sure it looks nice but ya gotta ask yourself,is it worth it?, its just as easy to have an empty rubbermaid for feeding only anyway
good luck

Thanx for the info and the comment, I don't know what I was thinking on that day, I usually feed them f/t and I place um in a separate "Feeding container."
But I do appreciate the comment.

ZFelicien Jan 02, 2005 10:43 AM

here's the male

Brandon Osborne Jan 02, 2005 07:23 PM

Definately not a White phase. A pretty brooksi, but white phase have a bone white appearance in person, that just doesn't come out on camera. Seeing the different "normal" color phases side by side is remarkable. It's like night and day.

Adult White phase Brooksi.

Dave, that girl is NICE! Is she one that you got from me a couple of years ago? Super-sweet! I wish I had kept a few of those for myself, but hypos never did anything for me. That girl on the other hand does.

hey brandon-

i got this girl at the ny metro reptile expo in '03 from the same guy keith was getting his high reds from, back when he was into brooksi/floridana.
i will probably get her out of brumation early and get her going again so she will be ready next spring. i would like her to breed with a male i hatched out in '02 (pictured) or with a nice krysko male.
-did you get my email?

have a good one
