bedding for burm

gunner3810 Jan 01, 2005 04:45 PM

I just wanted to know if pine bedding is safe for her I know ceder is bad but I never thought about pine. I can buy pine shavings in bulk so I did'nt if I should use it or not. Right now I am in the process of "fixing" up my snakes cage. Thanks.

Although I no longer use pine (and haven't for years) I used to keep all my burms and balls on it and I never had a problem. This was before I heard pine 'can' be bad for reps.

Some of them lived strictly on pine for 10 years before being switched over.

I now use aspen and cyprus and would recommend you do the same.

Some burms develop respiratory problems from the dust produced by wood particulate-types of beddings; just something to watch out for. Cypress mulch usually has large splintery pieces and if ingested, can be fatal, or, at the very least, produce a very expensive vet bill. Two very safe beddings are CareFresh (a recycled paper product), or, my preference, good old fashioned newspaper; still the best bedding. I use aged black and white sections and have been keeping my "home" snakes on paper for over 30 years (the herps at my wildlife center have natural substrata for public exhibit purposes but I still like newspaper best).
