from what i know, no that coccidia is species specific, correct me if i am wrong

an easy way to keep things clean is to use 2 rubbermaid bins to keep your dragon in, you use one, change to the other, soak that one overnight and then repeat the process daily. Use sudsy ammonia to soak things and in the rubbermaid bins. use only things that can be disinfected easily and switched out and soaked nightly for your basking spot, smooth rocks are far better then wood for disinfecting. Keep him on papertowel while in the sick tank, its much easier to clean up. Hope that this helps some, if you wanna get rid of coccidia, gotta be real thorough about things, the rubbermaid sick tanks are the way to go in my opinion.

yea I have been reading the section in the book by Vosjoli, Maillox, donoghue, klingeberg and cole
"The beared dragon manual" new 2001 ed.

two "cages" both clean, switch and clean every day etc....
getting ready for that , got a gallon of plain bleach and a scrub brush!

I have some rubermaid tubs handy as I have a 55 Galon reef tank and use them for water changes when needed.... of course clean well between jobs!

well as they say "No Rest for the wicked" .... guess I must be BAD !!!

i have found as have others for it to be better for ridding things of coccidia, some reason they can be resistant to the bleach, just a suggestion

Great!

this is why I am posting... to see what others have to say.

BTW: the book I have says that some times they canlive thru even a formalin solution WOW tough little buggers...

seems like the small simple bugs can be hard to kill
example: Anthrax

happy 4th to all,

thanks!

The meds givin to the dragon will strip it's intestines of both good and bad. Start with probiotics now, during, and after treatment. Should help make things a lot easier on the dragons digestive system. Wal-mart or a phamacy will carry this. The one I use I got at Wal-Mart and was the same I got fronm my exotic vet. Name is Rexall Acidophilus Blend, avtive ingredients are Plant Polysaccharides, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium animalis BB-12. Comes in a capsule with powder inside. Use the powder to dust prey or salad as you would with calcium, and vitamins. I find this to be a very, very important part in fighting coccidia, and keeping the yeast levels in the stomach from getting out of control. Good Luck.

Or would you add it as an available source?

I have never heard or seen this brand but it has the two main ingredients that we have found Dragons do well on, Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium. Walmarts is pretty much all over the US I think and in many places owners have been buying two items and mixing them, so adding that would help a lot of owners and dragons

OK, also I was looking at an acidopholous (sp) for reptiles at my local petsmart store, I don't have the brand handy.

I will be doing what I can to help him get "Cleaned Out"

like the vets said before they did the exam:

they were glad I saw a problem and acted before he was half dead.

they say they have too often seen folks bring reptiles in only when they are nearly gonners.

sad to hear as I sure as heck knew my guy was not right.

in fact now that I have a diagnosis I can say 90% sure that he first go it about 2 weeks before this as he started to act differently from that time on.

at first I just thought it was him "Growing up" as I did not see any digestive problems... it was just some changes in prefered sleeping and basking spots.

and a bit shy of handling; normaly he come right up to me.

as of now he still has good fat pads and drinks so today I will start with some pedia. and cleaning the cage and swaping to a "Fresh streile" cage I just bought yesterday.

tomorow I will get meds from the vet and ask him some questions.

I don't have the name of the meds but he said:
oral tratment for 3 weeks and stool test at the end to see what results are... cost about $15.00 for the meds.

which sounded ok .....

he's one of only 3 vets in my county that do reptiles.

if anyone lives in Pinellas County Florida I'd be happy to give name and number to you.

he's in Largo.

thanks all and I'll keep you posted on any news....

Petrsmart I know carries a product called Acidophiliz that contains both the active bacteria we like and that the dragons seem to do well on, with no side effects seen. Its made by Pet Authority

If you really like your vet, please add his or her name to the HerpVetConnection.com site so others in your area will be able to check and locate them.

Good Luck with the treatments!

BTW, you are only a hour north of me, one of my babies in March went to a girl that lives in your town also to replace ones she lost to yellow fungus. Do you know a Tanya with bearded dragon(s) there

When I treated mine for coccidia last time I used that Acidophilliz (sp?) it worked well. I also added pedialyte to the mixture. I would measure out desired amount of albon and then fill the 3 cc syringe the rest of the way with pedialyte. I froze the pedialyte because once open it is only supposed to be kept for 48 hours. Coccidia is a pain in the but.

It keeps good that way and you only have to thaw one out a day for them. After frozen we just toss them in a plastic bag and keep in the freezer...... stuff it too expensive to waste.

We also used diluted gatorade and freeze that the same way.
