Rex hates Anoles?

ChaoticCoyote Jan 01, 2005 05:10 PM

I recently moved Rex the iguana into my "Florida room" office -- where his cage is next to a bank of jalousie windows that look into our nice, green back yard. The windows also allow him some fresh air.

These windows are home to dozens of cuban brown anoles. These are small lizards, from one to three inches snout-to-vent, and they've been a fascinating source of entertainment.

Rex seemes to *hate* the anoles. He's many times their size -- about 6 inches SVL (and much broader). They're insectivores, so they don't threaten his veggies. But whenever anoles come near his cage, Rex gets very testy, jumping, flaring his dewlap, and otherwise acting quite put-out.

I don't think it's a problem, but the behavior is interesting.

It's interesting , i have a collared lizard and my iguana seem to be very interested in the collared enclosure. Once he climb near the enclosure, my collared was all puffed up and hissing all that he can and my iguana show absolutely no sign of seing or being impressed by that small lizard that was doing his best to look menacing. Curious that your iguana hates cuban anole and that my iguana ignore my collared lizard....

The anoles have also pestered my big plated lizard, Clyde (a Gerrhosaurus validus). One of the big female anoles, about 7cm SVL, jumps into Clyde's enclosure to steal crickets. So far, she's avoid his lunges, but time will tell if she continues to get a free lunch, or becomes one...

Rex the Iguana is calmer today. Perhaps he was just feeling cranky.

That's really odd, with my expirence with iguanas and other animals my adult iguana seems to not care about them. I have been introducing my iguana to various animals since he was a baby and it has somehow made him uninterested in them. When my iguana was 2 years old I introduced him to an adult leopard gecko and he simply licked AT it and ignored it. The gecko just totally ignored the iguana. Now don't get me wrong, I only let them meet and I don't keep them anywhere near each other at all. I usually let them see each other for 5 minutes.
Anyway my iguana has never been hostile towards other animals.

Rex isn't hostile -- he's agitated. My theory is that he's being affected by the anoles, who are doing their mating rituals these days.

None of the other reptiles seem to bother Rex; he's housed right next to Cylde, the big plated lizard, and they don't seem to care one whit about each other.

My wife suspects Rex may be reacting to his new location, which is next to windows that open into our backyrad. He gets lots of fesh air, and heard the birds outside. At the moment, though, we have herons and a peahen making noise in the back yard, and Rex is resting contentedly.
