Handling...

Natrix_natrix Jan 02, 2005 01:01 AM

I was wondering about the Irian Jaya and JCP sizes.
Are they to be handled?
Are they nice/safe to handle, even the large ones (females?) or are the males (smaller?) safer to handle? (compared to a 4 feet Ball Python)

Do they like to bite like the chondros?

Thanks in advance

my 6 foot JCP is great with handling. I can disturb her any time day or night. she has only tried to bite me once during feeding when she was like 4 foot. she isn't head shy, meaning i can handle her around her head and she doesn't try to bite. she is a great pet snake.
i don't know about the IJ's. I've only had a JCP.

First of all, not all Chondros are agressive.

I can't speak for other Carpets, but Jungles are usually pretty calm when they are adults. The younger ones can act nervous and will sometimes strike, but not all. A lot depends on their personality. I think most people will agree that when they do get bit, they made some sort of mistake such as having food scent on them, moving way too quickly because they were in a rush, handling a mother protecting eggs, etc.

And, you can get bit by a Ball too.

Ive yet to see a nasty adult carpet, but on the flip side i have yet to see a real tame baby. yes ive seen babies that are still a little nervous and its defensife yet ive seen them where everything is an enemy. Its just baby carpets they bite at everything, Handle them hold them and they will calm down very fast. Coastals, jungles and jcps are all like this as babies. Im not sure if IJs are just as bad but i know Coastals and JCP's can be pretty bad as babies but then dog tame adults, I have my two year old (3 in july) coastal since he was straight out of the egg, and hes only bitten me twice both times i deserved it. It just depends on the snake.

This is the male im talking about

I have a baby JCP, he's very nervous but has never bitten me at all.

i agree. there's usually two things i hear about carpet pythons, babies are bastards and adults are sweethearts.
