Mesh cage, will it work?

serjuanca88 Jul 03, 2003 07:48 PM

I have been thinking about building a snake cage out of 1X2s and mesh or screenlike material. I would make the bottom and maybe part of the sides solid. Then the rest would be screen. Would this be a good cage for a snake?

I do not want to use any glass. I also want an open air enclosure like this. I would like to put it near a window and put a small plant (something like a small tree like plant).

Would this be acceptable as far as the cage goes?

Mesh enclosures for snakes are problematic. They don't hold humidity or heat at all, so if it's a species that needs more than room humidity, you may have problems. Also, some snakes will rub their noses on mesh and injure themselves. They'll rub on glass and plastic, too, but mesh is probably more abrasive on the nose.

Well, I was thinking some sort of corn snake or hognose. I live in Texas and a pet store near me sells many F1 native animals. If I do get a snake I will probally get it there.

I have to agree about noserub.

I sell aluminum screen cages, targetted for chameleons. I've had some customers wishing to put them on their sides and utilize them as outdoor basking cages from Uros and Beardeds, but I really would worry about suggesting it for snakes. Humidity issues can always be worked around, but the potential for physical injury should always be avoided.

i would have to say.

NO as you have no way of regulating the heat unless the room is heated in which case you have one temp throughout with no cool side.

Wouldn't a heat lamp provide heat in a little area even though it would desperse quickly

I would use a sturdy rubber-coated wire mesh, and NOT screen, but it should work. If the humidity in your local area isn't the same as what the snake needs, you may have some issues keeping the cage humidity up.

Ok, thanks. The area I live in is very very dry.
