I want to aquire a monitor....

bradburya Jan 02, 2005 01:12 PM

Hello, I a thinking about getting a differt kind of lizard to keep and I am greatly considering a monitor. I want one that ranges from 18-24 inches when full grown I want it to mainly eat the following insects and mice. Is there such a monitor lizard out there of this size that does not cost to much I am willing to pay $80 dollars for it. I will probably get it at the Dixie Reptile Show in Feburary (if they have any there).I want it to be of intermediate care. I wanted to move on to keeping something else as I am tired of keeping Leopard geckos and Anoles although I still like my Tokays.

Thanks for the help,Adam Bradbury

How long will it take before you tire of keeping a monitor? Pets that you don't enjoy keeping usually get less than optimal care.

You are not going to find a monitor in that price range in the dwarf species unless it is dead or on the way there. Try maybe adding another 120 to what you want to spend and then an ackie would fit that criteria.

Timors stay small and don't cost a fortune. These are good monitors to have unless you want to hold and play with them.

They and any small monitor need enough room to run and climb. Ackies also like to dig burrows.

What size cage are you planning on keeping the monitor in? If it is an aquarium, noone on this forum would recomend a monitor.

There are chameleons, pythons, and monitors in my jungle room.

monitors are nothing like geckos, and it sound as if you just want somthing new as soon as you have kept somthing for a while, i would say maybe take some time do your research, and IF YOU STILL WANT A MONITOR ( going by your reqiurements) get a timor. they get anywhere between 18-28 inches, only cost about $100, but they are very skidish, so if you want to handle it save some money and get an ackie.

I have loved monitors for decades, from back when you had ony three choices (savannah, nile, water).

Of course, the coolest thing about them is the way then can look at you with something intelligent in their eyes.

Now I see all these amazing, gorgeous monitors available, and have no idea what attributes each species has.

Now that there are so many species available, which ones are:

1. generally the 'tamest', and are easiest to work with and display the most intelligent behavior.

2. the easiest to keep and breed.

I know that 1 and 2 will be different species.

I also know that there will be no one answer to each question.
