Joining Children of the Corn

Thanks again for all the good responses to my post below. Seems to be a good community here.

I ordered my "regular" corn form South Mountain Reptiles and my 4 month old female should arrive Tuesday 1/4. I got a little 10 gallon tank all set up and ready to go for her. Two hides, small branch, small water bowl, computer paper substrate, heat tape on bottom, 40 watt light on top. I have some aspin shavings I use for my Western Hognose, should I cover have the tank with it for the corn? Is there anything im missing?

I usually feed my snakes in a seperate container, rather than their cage. Is that the preferred way for Corns as well?

THanks!

You can't go wrong ordering from Don at South Mountain.
You will receive a very nice corn snake.
Do not be surprised if it is a little defensive.
neonate corns can be a little defensive. Everything is a threat to them.
With regular handling it will calm down nicely.
Just put about an inch and a half layer of aspen shavings in the bottom of the tank.
How small is the water bowl? You want it large enough for the snake to curl up in if it so desires.
Feeding in a separate container is a good idea and a regular practice of "children of the corn"
Make sure you have good clips for the screen top for your 10 gallon tank. Corns are escape artists.
I would also recommend covering about half of the screen top.
This seems to keep the humidity at a decent level for shedding.
good luck and keep us posted.

This Okeetee is from Don at South Mountain

you need to have a precise way to measure the temps, both on the cool side and the warm side. DON"T use those little plastic strips they sell for fish tanks. You need to put a thermometer directly on the bottom of the tank, cause that is where your snake will be. Air temps don't matter as much as surface (or belly) heat.

I would recommend you buy "The Corn Snake Manual" by Kathy Love. In my opinion, it is the best book on cornsnakes on the market. And it is relatively cheap! Only about 10-12 dollars at Petsmart!
