Yes, eastern screech, gray phase. He's fully flighted, but is completely blind in the one eye and probably only sees shadows at best in the other. He tries to live up to his name though...tear in with beak and talons if you give him half a chance LOL.

All of our birds are wild, but none are releasable due to permenant injuries.

The eagle lost a wing as a fledgling somehow (snapped or wrenched off). He only survived because the parents were still feeding him out of the nest. Vet estimated he'd lost his wing 2 weeks prior to being found.

The screech owl and barred owl are both mostly blind. The barred owl was hit by a car - flew in front of it. The screech we think hit a tree or something while flying.

The great horned owl was shot by a poacher and had half a wing surgically removed.

The Red-tail hawk has a wing that is hyper extended and it doesn't work well enough to support weight for proper flying.

The barn owl I believe had damage in one of his wings from gout. He still is having problems with cysts forming where some of his blood feathers are coming in and the vet may have to eventually go in and remove part of the wing if it keeps happening.

The only bird not injured is the red-shoulder. He's not releasable because he's imprinted on humans having been taken out of the wild as a fledgling illegally by some guy who thought it would be cool to have a bird and then nearly starved it to death feeding it bread and earthworms for two weeks.

I hear its a great city, but I was up there over Thanksgiving and it was HORRIBLE. We got there rode the tram and walked like .5 a mile to my sisters apt (right near the million dollar mile, michigan ave etc) and it was like 10 degrees with the wind chill (50mph winds); raining sleeting and snowing all at the same time. I've never been so glad to get inside in my entire life, especially since we had no clue where we were going. Then my mom thought it would be a good idea to take the bus to the aquarium lol anyways seems like a really neat city, just not in the winter time!

Falconer's and rehabbers work under different conditions than we do in order to work with and/or possess raptors. Falconer's I believe are required to apprentice under an already licsensed and permitted falconer for a minimum of a year before they can apply for their own lic. and permits to own/possess any type of bird of prey. Rehabbers have their own various regulations and have to have special permits in addition to their own rehab. lic. in order to deal with raptors. Even veterinarians have to have special lic./permits of their own in order to treat raptors that someone might bring them.

I work at a nature center. We have state scientific collecting permits for the regular raptors (& other native animals) and a federal permit for the eagle.
