Problem...

Goatman Jan 02, 2005 09:15 PM

I got a baby okeetee a little over two weeks ago from the local pet shop. He had been fed right before I bought him and choked down the pinkie just fine. 3 days later he had defecated and no longer had a bulge so I gave him another small pinkie. Again, down it went without a problem. About 4 days later he pooped again, but I decided to wait the normal week before feeding again, figuring he ate the second pinkie so quickly due to pet shop conditions or possibly shipping. Week came and went and he decided not to eat. A couple days passed and I noticed his eyes clouding. Chocked it up to shedding and patiently waited. Three days passed and today his eyes are crystal clear, but there is no skin to be found. He isn't rubbing aggressively against the side or cage furniture, as would be indicative of him actually shedding. I'm quite confused and wouldn't mind some words of advice...

Oh, I tried feeding him this afternoon to no avail.

After they go into the "blue" they will then clear up and look basically normal.
About 3 to 5 days after this they will shed.
A lot of snakes don't like to eat while in the shed.
After it sheds I would be willing to bet it will eat without hesitation.

This is the perfect reason why this forum is here. I am sure that many of us read this question and thought, is this for real, or is he pulling our leg. I read the question and thought, wow a new herper into the group and he is truly concerned about the well being of his snake (almost mother hen type of concern). Even better is when an experienced keeper like Draybar answers his question in an informative nature without any shots for the newcomer not knowing about this common event. The two of you guys answered his question and calmed his nerves on what he thought was a scary issue that might cause him the loss of his new snake.
Sorry for the odd post but it is just nice to see the forum work right with out problems.
Thanks
