Where do you guys get these great plants?

TheDrew1 Jan 02, 2005 10:01 PM

Every time i get a new 4' cage i go to lowes or home depot to try to find a large ficus or umbrella but i always have no luck. And when i look at your guys cage pics, i see these big tall and bushy ficuses, where are you getting them? I usually end up getting a palm which my chams like but i liked to find a large bushy ficus.

Thanks

You should try looking for nurseries in you area (yellow pages)
lots of them will have a good selection of large indoor plants
to choose from. Home Depot, Lowes etc. usually don't have
anything that great imo. Most cities will have at least one good nursery that specializes in indoor plants and exotics.
I just discovered ficus "alii", a really cool ficus tree.

nurseries will be more expensive but likely healthier plants. HD usually has them during the season (depending on where you live). In the fall nursries are often have major sales b/c they want to reduce their overwintering stock. I know this doesn't help right now but for future ref. I know that I know this but...where do you live?

I try to keep a rotation going. Right now I have a cut back ficus under lights for the winter and will take out the scheff and put this in sometime in the spring so that the scheff can get some TLC for awhile! lol!

btw, be careful with palms b/c many have sharp leaf blades and can cut a mouth or tongue if trying to eat it.

Ive had no luck at home depot. Ive found that ficus trees invariably die, LOL, and Ive had a lot of fun with hibiscus plants from private nurseries. The chams seem to like them as well.
