silkworms eating carrots?

veiledchamlver Jan 02, 2005 10:49 PM

i bought some silkworms and the container they came in had a sticker on it that said silkworms will eat freshly peeled carrots until supplied with mullberry leaves or chow. Anyone know if this is true. I tried it and it looked like they were eating but i don't know for sure.

I have never heard that but if they do, it will be for a very limited time and they will not be able to complete their life cycle - and likely will not even make it through their first molt. I hope you have chow or fresh leaves on hand.

Just curious, where did you get them?

hey, nice you can just go and pick them up! with shipping california silkworms would be the same but if you live close to him I am sure they would be much cheaper. Your best bet is to mate a pair of adults and harvest the eggs. They will keep for a very long time. Just take out what you need. Btw, I noticed that John (california silkworms) has eggs for sale, too!
