The Chytrid fungus

I just read the previous post about it and I wonder if the scientists know what is causing the big spreading of the fungus?
From what I have heard it is belived to have been brought from Africa with the Xenopus Laevis some time during the early/mid 1900, but was it a big problem in Africa back then and did it kill that many anurans? What I meant with the spreading of the fungus was why has it become such a big problem just in recent time when it has obviously been around for over 60 years?
Does anyone know anything or have any theories?
