something is desperately wrong with my crested. Opens mouth open wide/wont eat ... dying.

For the past few weeks I've noticed that my male crested which I've had for over a year hasn't been eating properly. I've been letting him lick crested gecko food/babyfood off a sterilized syringe but his health has been declining. Yesterday I noticed he was doing horrible and I went to touch him and he is so weak. Then he opened his mouth up real wide and stayedlike that for a while then shut it. He keeps doing this. I have him in a small tank now so I can keep an eye on him. I've been trying to get him hydrated with drops of water on his nose and some crested gecko food but I dont think hes going to make it. Why is he opening his mouth like this. Hes so weak I even thought he died a few times. I feel terrible. Any input is needed! Also between last night and today he did go to the bathroom but hasn't moved so he sat in it.

you'd have to ask someone who has dealt with this in person, but it sounds like something similar to what is talked about on this thread. http://forums.kingsnake.com/view.php?id=661251,661251

sounds like it's probably too late but good luck and keep doing what you're doing.

im bringing him and another crested male that may have had contact with it to a reptile vet in an hour. I printed that out and hopefully the vet will be able to treat my geckos and if this one does not make it at least his buddy can.

Is it possible to get the drug mentioned - Flagyl (Metronidazole) - over the counter or do you need a prescription for that?

It's generally available with a script. But it can be had in the fish medication section of your local pet shop, as well as many internet pet supply sites.

The best preparation for this use is a suspension, but it's only viable source is Mexico.

The vet said he is really weak and malnurished and gave me some calcium suppliment, an antibiotic, and a type of nutrition suppliment that I have to force feed him. I have also been giving him warm baths and raised the tank temperature. He seems to be doing alot better and even started shedding (rubbing his head on the ground to break the shed around his head). But I have a concern about his vent area. When I took him out of the bath I noticed that he had something red coming out of his vent. It doesn't stain the towel so its not blood. What could this be? I am definetly calling the vet in the morning.
