albino strains incompatible?

fredd Jul 03, 2003 09:24 PM

I am just getting a second opinion on this, so please noone jump my shorts like I am a complete idiot(like is done by some individuals who think they know it all). I was told that the rainwater albino strain and the tremper albino strain are not compatible. Therefore if two albinos (one from each strain) are crossed hets for albinos will be produced instead of actual albinos. If you don't know anything about this please do not give me a genetics lecture because I am very familiar with how a homozygous recessive trait works, like albinism. However, I was told by a breeder that because these two strains are not compatible that is what happens, i.e. a het for albino being produced instead of an actual albino when two albinos are bred. Again I repeat only answer this question if you know first hand of instances where crossing these two lines with albinos does in fact produce hets for albinos instead of albinos.

yes thats correct. the different albino strains are as different as a patternless and an albino. thats why they are different strains.

The two types of albinism are found on different loci making them not the same albino.

loci? sorry don't know what that means. also, there are 3 types of albino known thus far.

Have you bred it to all 3 known albino strains?? Also, I was wondering which known albino strain it resembles most?? I am sure it looks really cool!!

I still have yet to get them, waiting for the female to lay a clutch of eggs before she is sent out. I'll post pics, and I do plan to breed them to Bell's, Tremper's, and Rainwater's to see if they are a separate strain or not. I'm crossing my fingers on this one, and if they are a separate strain, hopefully they will be compatible with blizzards and patternless!
Thanks

Tremper and Rainwater are different mutations, and crossing them will produce double hets, not albinos. It's a well known fact in the leopard gecko world.
