breeding beardies

willis1234 Jan 03, 2005 09:37 PM

I got a female bearded dragon from a pet shop a year ago and a couple weeks after I had it it layed eggs. I now have a male in the cage that is very over weight but is getting thinner. I usually have a heat lamp uvb fixture and a heating pad on medium. For a month I cooled them down and by turning the heating pad down to low and turning the heat lamp off but keeping the uvb lamp on. Do you think that they will breed? If so what signs will the female show that she is ready to breed because I have noticed that her color has been very light and that she sort of paces the cage alot. I was wondering if that was a sign. Any information will help thanks!

You don't need to cool beardies to breed them, they will do it whether or not they go through a brumation. You're best bet is to separate them for a week and then reintroduce them for a week and repeat until she takes. They should also not live together all the time, it'll put too much stress on her over a long period. What is the heat pad for? Heat needs to come from above not below. Beardies can't regulate their temps from below and it can actually do more harm than good, just FYI.

I dont just have a heating pad on the bottom. I also have a heat lamp. The pad is just to get the temp up a little more. Also my male doesnt seem to be bothering her and a guy I know that breeds bearded dragons said that he just keeps his beardeds together all year long. If I have to seperate them do you think that I could put a divider down the middle of my 75 gallon that I have them in. The divider will be black so that they cant see each other.

Ya, that should work for getting them breeding. I still wouldn't let them live together all the time though, it's just too big of a risk for problems. If you talk to most breeders they'll tell you the only time their dragons have contact with each other is for breeding purposes. There still are some people that run harrems but even that is becoming less and less.
