Importation of Non-CITES animals?

J_Kutz Jan 04, 2005 12:21 AM

I have been trying to track down information regarding the importation of non-CITES animals from Thailand to the US. A friend of mine over there has a handful of snakes which are currently strong breeders that he is willing to sell, but I am not certain what would need to be done in order to get them acrossed the pond legally.

The species in question are not threatened and are not currently listed on either of the CITES listings so we should have no problems there, but I am not certain on other considerations which may exist. Any help on the matter would be great (links to appropriate websites or name of governing publications).

I would check with US Fish and Wildlife (USFW) first, as I'm sure they have paperwork they'd want you to fill out despite the CITES status. Any word search on the Internet should bring up their home page. They seemed helpful when my sister-in-law was considering bring back her pet RES from Kuwait (which, although it wouldn't have been too involed, she ended up leaving in Kuwait after I did her research for her!).

Figured as much. I may end up looking for a middle man to handle the actual paperwork in this case. Since I am not in any way motivated to become an import/export agent...just recieve a few snakes from a friend.

Thanks for the response.

Give them a call anyway and ask.

check with us fish and wildlife, they do seem to be the big problem, my husband moved to the us from canada and his iguana and ball python were almost confiscated and destroyed because he had not crossed at the right border with them. worth callng just to be sure!
