Is my tegu sick?

Mikal Jan 04, 2005 02:33 PM

I just received a new beautiful blue tegu by mail. She's eating up a storm of mice, pinks, and small adults. I also fed her some strawberries covered in egg. This morning I woke up to a strong smelling pile of diahrea. Can this be because of the fruit or eggs? Is it that she is sick? Is this something a vet should check out or something that may go away in a couple days by just feeding her mice?

shipping can increase stress levels increasing levels of coccidia. I would wait a week to see how she does, then take a fecal sample to the vet to check. you can also run a gram stain but that needs to be read by a herp vet. if she is eating well and active, that's what counts.

Smelly stools/diarrhea can be a symptom of parasites so bringing in a fecal sample to the vet would be a good idea. As previously mentioned it could just be due to stress if the animal is eating well and active but the smell makes me think otherwise especially if it was a strong sour smell.

Sometimes you can actually see the parasites in the stool, but that is more likely if he has a tapeworm or roundworms. When I give my tegu something to eat that he isnt used to, like chicken, he gets a very upset stomach. My guess is that its stress though. But to be sure you could bring a stool sample in to your herp vet.
