That's a smart looking young snake you have there, Justin. It sure is satisfying to see that it's willing to feed so readily, especially on a mixed diet(fish/mice).
Too bad about the "missed" opportunities - you did'nt have your camera with you, did you? Maybe next time. Anyway, always good to here about "the one that got away". Shows that they're still out there.

I wouldnot be able to take a pic anyways. They moved to fast. It would be blurry. Or I'd be the clumsy fool i always am and fall in the water and my camera would mess up and I would fall on the snake which would probably turn out ot be a cotton mouth, it bite me and i would drown in water 3" deep. Thats how bad of luck I always have. Oh well. you can be sure I will get one tmore at least this year and i'll post pics of it. My dad and i are going fishing to wilson dam, Tennessee river this saturday/sunday. Maybe i'll get one then. Maybe a big yellow belly water. Oh Does anyone know if red bellied water live in my area( north west Alabama)?

I've not yet fallen into the water after a snake, but I've sure thrown myself in. However, I've never herped in cottonmouth country so I agree, caution is wisdom.
There's no question that any pics of yellowbellys would be greatly appreciated! I'm not familiar with your area so I can't say if redbellys live there or not. In fact, I'm not FAMILIAR with specific water snake locales anywhere except my basement!
Good luck on your weekend.

You can tell when you have a cottonmouth...They are big, mean, and do not go any where in a hurry (they do everything on their own terms). As well, they have their own unique smell and rarely beat a quick retreat. Luckily, legend makes them out to be worse than they are. I have stepped on them (not a rare occurence since I find up to 36 in 2 hrs occasionally) and have yet to be chewed on (though there have been a few close calls). I normally do not find them in creeks anyway as they appear much more common around ponds and pools where it is easier to hunt frogs. Andy
