Problem with tail

Deedle79 Jan 04, 2005 04:38 PM

I have three leopard geckos, 2 females and 1 male. One of my females has a circular hole in the skin at the top part of her tail. Any ideas on what this is and how I can treat it. Thank You.

Have you left any sort of insects in the cage after feeding? Have you seen any aggression between your geckos? Do you notice any sort of mites in the cage or on the gecko? Is there anything that could have poked the tail at all?

There are usually a couple crickets left in after feeding. The three of them have been living together for a long time and have never been aggressive with each other, but that doesn't mean that they definitely aren't fighting. Also I noticed the skin around the tail is very dry, but it seemed to be very circular so maybe mites. I don't know what they would look like, but I don't see anything on them.

mites are usually very very small little bugs that can be red or white. And don't leave any sort of feeder in with the geckos when you're not watching it. That's probably the most likely reason. I'd guess crickets are nibbling on it's tail when the leo is sleeping. Take out all the left over crickets when feeding is over.

You mentioned that the area around the wound is dry... I've came across some of my own geckos that've had small wounds on parts of their bodies after they've experienced a bad shed cycle.

There's a chance that could be the cause of the injury.
