Average weight?

spotsnbands Jan 04, 2005 06:34 PM

My Male who is about 4-5 months old is only about 28grams. To me he seems fine always active when I handle him, and always alert. Does this seem too small for his age? I have been feeding him by hand in which he doesnt take alot, but he drinks alot from a spray botttle ( I ad an electrodizer which also has Vit. C and D3). He does drink alot. I dunno... it just seems like he never eats his baby food, or the CGD. What do you guys think?

I have three males that are just around the one year mark and they weigh between 34 and 40 grams. I am always trying to get them to eat more as I feel they are on the small size. I just read from the Rhacodactylus book by "Philippe de Vosjoli, Frank Fast, and Allen Repashy" and it states that young adult crested geckos with tails weigh 28-33 grams. Large adult females with tails may weigh up to 60 grams. Males generally weigh less than females.
Hope this helps. By the picture your gecko looks fine from what I could see.

His weight sounds right for a 4-5 month old. Your gecko will grow much faster if fed a high insect diet. I have raised groups of cresteds on a nearly all cricket diet and others of the same age on a mixed insect/GGD diet. The cresteds raised on gutoaded crickets with GGD approx once a week grew MUCH faster and had a more robust overall appearance.

that's actually very big for that age. my 4-5 month old cresteds are about 13 G.

Thank you for your input, now I do feel better.

13grm for a 4-5mo. old seems kinda light in my opinion.

i would like to hear other peoples information on this from people who actually know how old their geckos are.

the geckos that i'm speaking of are 4.5 months old and weigh in at 11 G. they are from AC reptiles, are fed every single day crested gecko diet and every third day crickets.

Through my experence crested geckos gain about a gram and a half to two grams per month if feed correctlly. Which would make your crested the correct weight.

Just isn't so...

I've raised more than a few Cresteds, some from hatchlings and many from the 2g range. I'd have to say that the weight quoted for the male is well within the normal range.

Cresteds have a significant variance from one animal to the next with how rapidly they gain weight. I also believe that they grow more in "spurts" or “cycles” than a constant incremental basis.
