HELP!!!!

ryandonnelly Jan 04, 2005 07:57 PM

My chameleon eggs are growing mold and the numbers of them are increasing!!!!! Its been 2 months since she laid and i would think that they would have molded by now if they were infertile but they showed signs of shriveling so i added a little water and they molded but stayed dehydrated i used athletes foot powder and it doese not seem to be doing anything do you think the athletes powder is not the right kind? could they still be infertile? If anyone has an input i would be very appreciative Thanks Ryan

Hey Ryan,

They could be going bad for various reasons. Often, infertile eggs will go bad fairly quickly, but I've seen some go for a couple months before going bad.

Over watering the medium could also cause problems for the eggs, causing them to die off prematurely. But you also mentioned that you added water because they were caving in. Perhaps there was a problem prior to that.

Right now, all you can do is continue to incubate them. If your incubating medium is too moist, you may want to consider redoing it. Discard any molded eggs immmediately.

How old are the chameleons you are breeding?

Vincent

THANKS FOR THE RESPONSE! My girl is about a year and a half and my guy is just going on a year. She layed a big clutch she layed 41 but two molded off REALL quick. Now they have gone down hill and some of them have turned yellowish and im loosing hope! Starting to think they are infertile. This is my first time breeding and im not sure if i want to breed again because the incubation process has been such a hassle and ive heard that this was teh easiest part but to me mating them and her laying them was easier. I think they have to be infertile some of them are having yellowish on the top like a yellowish circle. Thanks for the response Ryan

What is the best way to add water? When one of my eggs started to shrivel i would just poor a tiney bit of warm water in the vermiculite around it could it be because they were not burried enough in the vermiculite because they werent that deep i was reading that i should have P of them covered and they were probably more like %. Thanks for the help! What should i have started out with liek a vermiculite to water ratio? And also isnt it better to be more dry than wet? I think because they got to dry and then i added to much water and they began to mold so i didnt put any water in there for a couple weeks and i put a tiney bit of athletes powder on the mold and it just grew through it! Do you think that they were just infertile because the numbers dropped pretty darastically when they started to mold and they were seperated by the 10s and all of them got it even when they were in a different tupperware inside the incubator? SO FRUSTRATING!!!! Thanks for the response Ryan
