Question about cedar?????

Chameleon996 Jan 04, 2005 08:02 PM

I recently took in an iguana with cage. She was not being fed anymore and I am keeping her until I can find someone to take her. My question is about her cage though. My male iggie is in a 5x3x3 all screen enclosure. The cage for the female is 5x2x3 with plexi doors and very little ventilation (there is one cutout for the heat bulb and a small screen cutout that is 6x6). Other than the problem with the ventilation the two inside ends of the enclosure are paneled with cedar shingles. I know that you should not use cedar bedding but I wasn't sure if the shingles would cause any problems. It looks very nice but if it is harmful then it should come out. I assume she has been in this cage for quite awhile and seems to be in good health.

Cedar is a toxin. The main concern is the oils, however there can be damage done with the odor as well. I would personally take it out.

I use cedar mulch in my iguana cage. I never knew that it was toxic... All I heard was that if they their food on the ground ontop of mulch or whatever that they can eat the mulch and it will harm them. Can someone please explain this whole thing about mulch because I don't want anything to happen to my iguana. ( Frank also called "WA" by my 1 year old sister. )
