leo substrate questions

josiahatteberry Jan 04, 2005 08:13 PM

i have my leo for a while now and i got him when he was young and i have had him for 7 months and when i got him the pet store told me to put him on that reptile turf stuff so he won't eat sand and get impacted. i was wondering that since he is older if i should switch to a new substrate or if i need to switch anyways due to any unknown to me reasons that turf is detrimentle. i've heard of many different types of substrates being used i didnt know which would be the most suitable and make my leo, Archimedes, happiest. thanks as always

If you equate being happy with not getting impacted and dying, I'd say stick him on paper towels. They're easy to replace, cheap and there is no possible chance of your leo becoming impacted from it.

What you choose for a substrate is dependant on a few things: how much experience do you have with leos (and herps in general) and what do you NEED. If you are interested in cheap, easy to clean & visually appealing...go with ceramic tiles. You may spend $10 in tile upfront but it is by far cheaper than any other substrate in the long run. Tile also holds heat better than most other substrates. Not to mention lots of colors & textures. I fill in gaps with play sand in one of my units that I use tile in, but you have to take care of ALL husbandry issues if you choose to use sand. Look around at other setups to see if you find something you like.
