Can I keep my RES with an Electric Blue Crayfish?

yasin1 Jan 05, 2005 12:03 AM

Hello;

I have a beautiful albino RES. He/she is doing great in a 15 gallon aquarium with filter and everything. Yesterday I went to a petshop to get him some live food and saw an electric blue crayfish while walking around the aquariums. Incredible animal... I asked the pet shop owner if I can keep them together but the guy didn't know s**t so I didn't wanna take any risks.

Do you think it would be wise to house these two species together?

Please let me know;
Thanks
Yasin

ps: Here is a link to see what an electric blue crayfish looks like...

hello....
first off i would hope that if you do plan on housing these 2 animals together that you get a larger tank!
the 'rule of thumb' (around here at least) is 10 gallons of water per inch of turtle. 20 gallons for 2 inches (shell length) etc.
also, if i were you, i honestly wouldnt house them together. first of all, the crayfish would/could probably hurt the turtle and if that would happen, i wouldnt want to pay the un-necessary vet bill to help the turtle get better.
secondly, you are also taking a risk of your turtle eating the crayfish. my turtles try to eat EVERYTHING i put in their tank, so i am sure that your turtle wouldnt at least TRY to eat the crayrish.
good luck in whatever you decide!

I had a crayfish in my tank for about a minute, he was bigger than the turtles and he got eaten. He was just a normal one, and I had gotten him with the idea that he would probably get eaten.

If your turtle is anything like my turtle he/she will try to eat the crayfish. I have my turtle with gold fish and guppies. They are generally too fast for her. But once every month or two she might make a catch. Although I think the remaining 7 goldfish are now too used to her tatics and may never get caught.

The best you could hope for would be that the crayfish would avoid being eaten until it's first shed. Once it was nice and soft after a shedding its skin the turtle would have a delicious easy meal. (and expensive too -- those blue crayfish are not exactly a cheap!!).
