is fogger any good for raising humid level?

samoID Jan 05, 2005 11:40 AM

hello!
i bought fogger (small electronic device that raises humid level by producing fog)
so, i installed it and it works...humid level in Oz's tank is around 60% and fogger is on only 3 times/day for 10 min!
so my question is, if there are any negative side effects?

please reply, thanx

I tried it once also when I had one of my BP in a 55 gallon. Unless you have something to protect the animal from the heat that is put off by the actual fogging piece and he can't knock it over. I wouldn't use it. Mone was knocked over in minutes. Those things are expensive, also. I would return it and start to save for a rack system. They hold humidity wonderfully.

it's not really hot...it's very small and it stands on the bottom of Oz's water dish!
there is no danger that bp can knock it over!
is this the only thing you tried to warn be about??
here's a link with picture!...

Maybe I had a defective one. Humidity is very different than moisture. Problems occure when a BP lays in too much moisture for too long. You have to think what makes it fog, some sort of heat, right. I could be wrong on that one.

I also had a problem trying to control the amount of mist comming out of it.

I definatley wouldn't put it in the water dish. If it doesn't hurt him directly it may frighten him if it turns on and he is taking a drink. I have had BP that didn't like to drink out of certain Water containers.
Do what you like but my suggestion stands. Get your 40 or 50 bucks back. Good luck!

I have found out over the last year and a half that most of the stuff on the shelves at pet stores is crap. Just a way for companies to make a buck. Watch and ask what the large breeders do. They have been around the animals for a long time and know what is best for them. If I had listened in the beginning I wouldn't have these things sitting in my closet:
-7 varried size aquariums
-7 or more heating lamps
-tank dividers
-many, many expensive and heavy water dishes and hide boxes
-Drip canisters (god knows why I bought these)
-a $200 enclosure that is just about useless
There are many more but you get the point.

Save the money and do what the breeders do. Beleive me it would have saved me hundreds.

Pic of Jason's Jungle Rack. Only about $250. Beleive me if you have one you will probably get more.

well, my tank is made from disused showcase, water dish cost me 2$, i made hide spots myself, on the ground there is fake grass...
and where i placed fogger is just temporarily spot!
thanx for your warnings!

If it's safe as far as not being knocked over by the snake and not burning the snake, the only thing that would concern me, is that it may produce too much moisture in the cage or may actually mist the snake. Both of which may lead to blisters or respitory infections amoung other things. I prefer just taking a squirt bottle and misting the cage myself a couple of times a day if the humidity is low that way I've got total control over the amount of water going in and where it goes. My son wanted to get that cool looking volcano fogger for the snakes, but I wouldn't let him for these reasons. But I can be overly cautious sometimes. Hope this helps.

i was concerned about too much moist as well, that's why i put it on timer!so, fogger produces fog 3 times a day for 10 min...that's the same if i spayed the tank with bottle.
when it turns off humid level is about 63%!

I'd have to agree with Bill - take it back. First of all having it in his water dish is a bad idea it may scare him, it'll be in his way if he tries to soak and from the reviews I read on it, this unit breaks down alot, and get too hot (ouch). It just sounds like a bad idea to me, it's always best to err on the side of caution. Again, just my opinion.

Is it glass with a screen top? If so you can wet a towel and cover the top of your scree 9/10s of the way. But this is very annoying and ugly. Most of the time people have aquariums because they think it looks better and this is a bit of an eye sore. Otherwise give it a good misting a couple of times a day. The only other option is a rack system that will hold in Humidity very well!

I have found that the best way to keep the humidity up is to put a water source directly over a heat source. I have flexible heat rope running under my substrate and my water dish sits on top of the heat rope. This normally keeps my humidity at 60% with no extra attention needed. For really dry days or days when I'm running my heater for my house I make sure that I spritz the snake cage with warm water once or twice a day and add a couple of smaller bowls of water around the cage and this usually helps. I have a big cage and it's not a little more work to keep just right but once I found the right combination it's a piece of cake. The right substrate will also help with your humidity.

I have 4 of those foggers (I have a fantastic contact for them). I use them with tarantulas and my water monitor and they work great.

I understand what Bill and Tosha (sorry if thats wrong) are saying, but if you have it on a timer set for 3 times per day, then IMHO you are doing nothing wrong.

If you think a ball python knocks things over, try a 4' water monitor! I have a pond in his enclosure and the foggers (2 for him) are sitting in salsa bottles siliconed to the corners of his pond. The top of the bottles are about 2 inches below the water line. This keeps him away from the foggers though he loves to climb all over the jars and everything else.

I just wouldn't leave it on 24 hrs per day, that would definitely be way to much for a ball. I am going to experiment with a display enclosure for one of my balls. I'll start off setting the fogger to activate several times per day, but for short periods of time. Another thing I might try is to connect it to a humistat with high/low setting so it turns on/off automatically.

I'll keep records and post later on.

I used an exoterra ofgger in my savu's cage for a LONG time, and only took the tank down because i dont have room for displays anymore...

Long story short, I had a piece of glass cut to the width of the tank and about 4 inches tall. I siliconed that in and i used a 2.5 g tank devider (also glass) wich i would guees is about 6"x4" or so and siliconed that into the corner standing up. I purchased the mini exotera water pump and had it fill the standing glass "resivore" feeding water to fogger wich was placed inside it. I added a few plastic plants, and a few rocks and it gave it a killer "misty water fall " effect.

If you have one of these im sure you have figured out that the more shallow it is the more fog it puts off (deeper = less fog) You can use this set-up to fine tune the fog output by raising or lowering the level of the fogger with aquarium gravel in the res. One thing to think about with this set up though is keeping the water clean. I would use a gravel vac every few days to change the water, but i changed the pump to a small fluvle filter to pump the water up. Another Idea would be to use one of the new whisper intank filters and that would eliminate the glass res. all together... but you get the idea.

here is a pic of when I first got it done before i dressed up the tank. you can see where the pump is hiden behind the rock.

enjoy.

thanx a lot, i might do the same or quite similar to your salvation!
i was thinking about putting fogger in a smaller bowl and cover it with web, so OZ won't be able to get near the pump.i think that would also help!
i'll let u know how i will solve that problem!

Try here.

http://www.kingsnake.com/ballpythonguide/

As far as safety for your snake i wouldnt really worry about covering it. It doesnt put off heat. If you stick your finger or hand over the water it pushes up you will slowly start to feel an ache. Its not anything thats going to hurt youe animal, and it should have the sence to move if its sitting on it. But in about 2 years of haveing that set-up, my Savu never really showed intrest in the fogger, and no ill effects. Balls dont climb as much, and spend less time in the water so i think you would be fine with a setup like that. Just make the water pard smaller so it can get the most use out of the enclosure.

Echo, thats an awesome idea about putting the glass in the corner! I like the waterfall effect created with the taller glass.

The filter I use is fluval 404, but I'm going to search through some old boxes. I'm sure I have a water pump in there somewhere!

Great....another project in the making!
