NY ban in current Reptile magazine

Linda G Jan 05, 2005 11:55 AM

There was an article stating what would is banned and the
green iguana was not even mentioned. It also stated that
those people who had any of the animals would be allowed
to keep them and would just need to get a permit. They will
not be allowed to breed them with this permit.

I myself think this is a good idea as it may prevent
some of the overpopulation of them. I myself would
have no problem with paying for a permit if necessary.
I hope I don't get blasted for this as I am sure there
are many different opinions on this issue.

I agree somewhat on the permit idea for some pets, but for iguanas I'm a little wishy-washy. On one hand, it would be good for people who actually care for their iguanas, but on the other hand, the animals that don't get permits most likely will be euthanized. The WNY Herp Assoc. apparently has been fighting to keep from having the permit issue enforced on iguanas for years now. So many people get iguanas and give them up a few years later when they get to big, maybe they should pass a law that requires people to know what they are getting into before they even get them. Kinda like how some animal shelters do a screening before they let you adopt an animal. That would still allow responsible people to get an iguana, and maybe it would eleiviate (sp?) some of the population problems too.

it only allows you to keep the animals you already possess, so once they die you can't get any new ones, and you expand your collection with any of the animals necessary. This means that in 30 years or so there will no longer be any of those animals legally kept in new york outside of zoos.

I'm fighting to try to get them to change the permit system so that if you are allowed to get a permit you can buy, sell, and breed your animals.
