natural looking humid hide

chipstahoy Jan 05, 2005 12:09 PM

what do you guys do to have a natural looking humid hide? plus, i don't like using perlite...it looks dumb, and it gets out everywhere sometimes. would some type of moss be ok?

as of now, my humid hides consist of coolwhip containers. any suggestions?

You shouldn't be using perlite in a humid hide anyway. Leos will lick that stuff up and die.

Anyway, if you want something natural, you can go to the pet store and buy resin hides that look like rocks. Just stick some moist moss under it and keep it on the warm side of the cage. That'd look pretty sweet and be nice and moist.

Reptilesupply.com has some awesome caves for really cheap that'd be good to use for a humid hide.

I've been using spaghnum moss for my humid hides. I got all my geckos when they were about 2 weeks old and they loved laying in it and licking the water from it. There was never a problem with them swallowing it or anything. The only problem I had was that when my oldest gecko got to about 6 months old she had a habit of raking the moss out of the humid hide... so I would have to clean it up off the tank substrate to make her takn look as clean as possible

I just took my rubbermaid container and used silicone to "glue" pieces of smashed slate and ceramic tiles to make it blend in a little better. I use Flukers moss bedding in all of my hides with no problems. (You can get it at most pet supply stores)

here is a pic of my Humid Hide it also has a few rocks on the inside to aid in shedding. I used a glue gun and Hot Glue.I also left the lid on the bottom so I can just pick it up and spray it with water.
Hope this helps
