Iguana affection

nutballchamp Jan 05, 2005 12:34 PM

Does your Iguana show any affection? I have handled and pet my Iguana just about every day since he was 2 weeks old nine years ago and he still tries to walk away from me every time. He is really friendly and only chases and bites me a few times a year during breeding season. Does anyone have an Iguana that will actually climb up on your leg and sit on your lap? Just curious, I still really love my Iguana.

Our iguana, Iggi, will crawl up us, and sit on our shoulder. If we are wearing shorts, she will jummp up and grab the shorts, and pull herself up that way, to avoid scratching our legs. At night, my wife will come over to Iggi's bed, (she's a free roamer, with her own bed in her own bedroom), and Iggi will grab her shirt collar, and pull my wife close and snuggle with her. Then she climbs up on my wife's shoulder, and lays for awhile. Sometimes going to sleep. Here is a picture (old) of her and my wife.

Thanks! It's one of my favorites too. It just goes to show you, that it's all in how an animal is raised. Iggi has been raised like we would a human child. Instead of a crib, and a bath at night, she had an enclosure, and a bath each morning. We held her, hugged and kissed her, talked to her and sang to her, just like a human child. She used to go to sleep on my chest, as I watched TV at night, and my wife would put her in her enclosure, still asleep. She became a free roamer when she was about one. 3 years later, she is an iguana that acts like a human child. She has never bitten us, tail-whipped us, or deliberately scratched us (we don't trim her nails). She does not require a leash when we go outside for our daily walks, and she is good with strangers. As a family member, she goes on vacation with us. We just find pet friendly hotels. I choose my online handles carefully, and I use the same handle on all forums on the internet. I'm like her "Daddy", and so I'm ig_daddy.

My iguana is more affectionate with the cats in the house than the people. He used to climb up on my lap all the time when he was younger before we got the cats, but now he likes to climb up on my bed and sleep in a pile with 2 of the cats. Sometimes he even shares my dog's bed with her. I'm not sure if its affection or that the animals give off a lot of warmth, but it's still adorable.
