don't feed bananas to your feeder mealies: their phosphorus to calcium ratio is so high, it would surely give your leos extreme calcium deficiencies. it's really high, i think something like 3:1.

Aside from the calhos ratio (which I did not know, thanks marla) I do know that the peels, well they love and devour them, but I fed some to the mealworm beetles and had a pretty bad die-off. I think there's residual pesticide on the peel. Maybe more than on other fruits since ppl dont eat the banana peel. So I would pass unless you washed the banana well with fruit wash before peeling.

what i meant to say was Cal to Phos ratio

you're welcome! i first ran into the lists of ratios while doing research for feeding my sugar gliders- they come in handy when trying to decide what to use to gutload insects as well.

i agree about the pesticides- i would not use non-organic banana peels. plus, i'd assume the peels have the same ratio as the fruit part, until i found out otherwise.

well, sort of. the first list i encountered was in my sugar glider book, by caroline macpherson (i think it only had calcium & phosphorous levels). the onther one i have i got from my vet (i have the same one for all of my pets, they are an exotics practice), and they have a little website @ http://www.swanimalhospital.com/ (i recommend them to anyone in oregon or washington). the other ones i have are just ones i've jotted down while researching food info for sugar gliders online. i think most had only Ca:Ph levels. i hope that helps a little bit.
