Woma Behavior Question?? Please Read!

cnidaria Jan 05, 2005 02:01 PM

Hey all-

I recently picked up a juvi woma, and I just had a few questions about him. He spends most of his time hiding, which I expected for a nocturnal snake, but do these guys gradually come out more in the daytime? Secondly, when I hold this guy, he is very deliberate in his movements, and never clings or wraps my arm. He just sits fairly still. Occasionally, he moves a bit, but I have not seen many pythons that stay so "loose" while being held. I am so used to species that wrap the hell out out your arm to stay anchored. Again, I assume that since he is a terrestrial snake, he would not cling, but was wondering if other woma owners had the same handling experiences? He seems similar to some blood pythons I have owned, which just sat limply while being handled.

This guy got lost in the Christmas fiasco with UPS packages, and came in a day late. His heat packs had crapped out the night before, and he spent that time in Chicago where it was very cold. I was sure he would be dead, but crossed my fingers, and when he showed up, he was ICE COLD. However, I handled him and he slowly warmed up. He has agressivley eaten twice, and seems perfectly fine otherwise. I was just trying to make sure that this behavior is normal for womas, and not related to his "freeze" incident. Please let me know your opinions!

thanks

I'll share my experience with these guys. Basically I have found that the young tend to be rather secretive, as they grow they become bolder and venture out more often. As adults they can be EXTREMELY active at night. The looseness is something Ive only seen with Womas. They basically hang like a limp piece of pasta when picked up. Mine have gotten more "snake-like" as they became older and now hold on more securely but they still do it - its pretty strange.
I should think that your youngster is o.k. considering hes eaten, but keep an eye out for mucous or going off feed.

Hi-

Thanks so much for the response! What you describe is exactly correct, so I feel better knowing that mine is not the only on with this behavior. As for mucous, he is clean, with no respiratory issues, and eats voraciously. I will try to get some pics of him soon!

take care!
