I found this snake in my front yard this morning. I'm in northern California west of Sacramento. Any ideas what it is? It's about 48" and when I approached it shook it's tail (even though there was no rattle on it).

Thanks

you guys in Cali are so lucky to be able to just find those. The rest of us have to buy them.
Many harmless snakes vibrate their tails when they feel threatened. He looks like a healthy specimen from the half you show in the photo. I hope you let him go on his way.
Thanks for the replies and id's. It was a very cool experience to see this animal in our yard. We didn't touch it - so it's still out there somewhere.
Most people who cant id a snake just kill it to be sure. The kingsnakes are a very good snake to have around, especially one that is 48+"!!!! They will eat unwanted rodents and other snakes, including the venomous ones. Great snakes to have around the house!! Great picture, thanks for sharing it!!
Here is mine, I had to buy this one!! LOL
