California Kingsnake vs. Eastern Kingsnake

HerperHelmz Jan 05, 2005 07:38 PM

Hey all,

I know size varies from snake to snake, but what would you say is bigger at hatching, a cali king or an eastern king?

Based on my experience I would say that on average the eastern babies tend to be a bit (1-2" longer than their western counterparts. But that's probably due to the fact that most of the easterns I've bred were on average slightly larger than the cal kings I've bred. It is known that the larger the mother, the larger the babies will be of any subspecies on average.
This year, my largest cal king baby was 13.5" and my largest eastern baby was 14" long. So it was almost a tie! If the parents of all of my kings were the same size I'm sure that the babies would probably have been close to the same size - Cal kings & easterns. . .

Hi Mike,

It really depends. Easterns from GA are large, and as such, they hatch out larger babies. My NJ babies were tiny by comparison, much smaller than my GAs, OBKs and the Desert Cal. kings I hatched in the early 90's. I'd have to say that they are generally pretty similar up to adult hood where eastens tend to outstrip them in length and bulk. Later.
