Australian Water Dragon Growth/Size

philliphall Jan 06, 2005 06:48 AM

Im interested in how large I should expect my male Aussie to get
(snout to vent and snout to tail). In the books and sites I have looked at it says various lengths from 24" to 4' - which is closer to the truth ?. I am also interested in how quickly they normaly reach adult proportion. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There is a huge Aussie picture posted on this forum, but I can't remember exactly where. You might have to search a little.
Mine are CWD, but growth should be parallel to their Eastern cousins.

Growth rate should be in the 3/4-1 1/2" per month range
Females will grow more slowly than males

At about 1 year, they should be approx. 12-14 inches snout to tail and I use that as an approximation of age up to about 24 months. Mine are just now approaching maturity and are still growing. 12/15/2005 Drago (f) 21" 130 gr. Tripod (f) 23" 200 gr. Avanyu (m) 25" 220 gr. Drago is the oldest April 2003), but as a female and a picky eater, she is lagging behind the other 2. I got them in July 2004 and figured from their size that they were 12-14 months old.

Has your Aussie settled down so that you can handle him, yet? I hope so. I know they are slightly more skittish than Chinese but it's been long enough now for him to have settled down a little. Tripod still doesn't like to be handled much, but Drago and Avanyu are pretty tame and will perch on the grandsons shoulders. Join us at graceful dragons. We'd love to have your input. There are some very friendly people on the forum.
