Hello,
I am new to this forum and hope that it works well for me.
I need some help, I have a young pac man frog who just WONT stop EATING.
The first day I came home with him the store said he wouldn't eat more then a cricket, so I could put him in a cage with my bull frogs, guess what He ate one bul frog the first day, second day he ate ten crickets (large) Third day he ate a fuzzy fourth and fifth he ate crickets (large) in large quonities, next day he had another fuzzy, that was two days ago, it is now Thursday and tuesday he ate a fuzzy tuesday night, well I got home from work and one of my fire belly toads jumped tanks, I have no idea how, I swear the frog is calling them over some how, there is a glass devider there is no way he could climb it it would just be inpossible.. .any ideas? If you email me at Chemer1a@aol.com I can send you pictures of my tank set up... If you could help me...please email me..
Anyway The fire bellys are poisons, I can't get the thing out of his mouth now the silly frog just hiss's at me all the time, when I get near him, I don't know what that is about either, the hissing noise.anyway when I first got home I noticed the toad missing and picked up the frog, and the toad is still moving in his stomach.. :*( ugh, I don't know how I am going to explain this to my five year old, that just named that toad today..
Either way will this fire belly kill my pac man? I hope someone can tell me there is something I can do to save him before it is to late, He is blowing bubbles out of his mouth I never saw that before, by the way he has doubled in size since he came home with me.
The pet store said that they had a fire belly toad get into the pac man before(a different one) and that he had died, but they couldn't prove it was the fire belly can anyone prove or dis prove that this can happen please email me ASAP Chemer1a@aol.com

THank you Greatly
and if he will survive can you tell me how the heck to feed him so he stops eating my other animals? I have a pixie on the way over in a few days and another pac man, a female, and I am not so sure this one will make it ... I really hope so..
Please help

Thanks

Jennifer

You should have done some research on pac-mans before you bought one! They will never stop eating, and they will eat any living thing in their tank even if they have to die doing so.

Well if your frog got a firebelly in it's mouth do whatever it takes to get it out. And if it survives, and that's a big if make sure there is no other animals in the tank with it and put a lid on the tank. A horned frog shoudl always be kept alone unless you are breeding it. And watch how much you feed them, because they won't stop eating even if they are full. You shoudl only have to feed a baby ever other day or every 3 days and that would only be about a half dozen crickets max. But if your frog has a firebelly in it's mouth it's probobly as good as dead.

I did do lots of research on him and continue to. Thanks for the advice. Thing is he is in a cage with a divider the divider is of glass, making it kindda his own cage, there is really no way that I can see that he could of gotten over the divider, its pratically inpossible not to mention the fact that the fire bellys are to small to hop that high (so I thought)....... There is a lid, but my husband was cleaning the one side last night and has a dumb tendincy to move the lid over the fire belly's and bull frogs and leave the pac man open since he can't hop that high, maybe it didn't fully cover the fire bellys and one got over that way. I have moved them all, the pac man is now in his own cage, he seems to "suprizingly" be doing just fine. We did try and take the fire belly out of his mouth his tounge was already wrapped up so the only way it would of gotten out was if we prid his tounge back and every time I did it he hissed like crazy at me, I couldn't get him out, trust me I tried. He is not hiding in the dirt like he usally does after eating, he is just out of the dirt sitting up today, seems good though...So I am crossing my fingers and praying.
The fire belly was a golden fire belly and my husband swears he read somewhere that they are in bred fire bellys and there is a chance they won't be poinsonis...so...heres hoping..
As far as eating... I have heard so many different things, one feed them every two to three days a large animal (fuzzy) and every day give them ten crickets (large) I have a cricket stone in the tank now, which I feed with 20 crickets and they come out whenever and he EATS them... then I was putting a fuzzy or pinky in every two days, or a frog Not by choice..
Someone at a pet store said they would never over eat. and the first three days I was lucky if I got this one to eat, he refuses fish, and refuses crickets smaller then the largest ones I could find, he wants BIG pray BIGGER then him most times. Otherwise he won't waste his time, and forget about fish, I tried rosies, and baby goldfish, I tried small....medium goldfish, I put them in his bowl I put them in the dirt so they would flop for a minute, and before they died took them ou the had no interest, and then I used tongs which a book sugested WHICH he ALWAYS hiss's at and won't touch anything that touchs them..Because they are yellow?
FROGS..lol..

I ll keep you posted. Hope he makes it.. all looks good right now.

How big is your frog? And try nightcrawlers. And try to not be in the same room with him once you put a goldfish in with hime. Also mice are ok, but only every once in a while, unless you want a blind frog. THey are too fatty and it builds up in the frogs eyes and they go blind from that.

ginevive Jul 05, 2003 06:17 AM

Here's how I feed mine; a typical week. I give him about 5-6 nightcrawlers on monday, maybe 4 crix on thursday, and maybe if one of them is out above the dirt, another nightcrawler on saturday. I do not like feeding mice at all because they are verrry fatty. Maybe once every two months if that, and fish are not that great because they harbor parasites. I just use nightcrawlers and crix. Vitamin powder on crix every few feedings, also.
I would either provide the frog with an extra water bowl, or just put him in a smaller tank temporarily with water up to his elbows and changed often, to help dilue any toxin from the fbt. If the frog seems ok in a few days, he will probaby pull through. I would put him in his own 10g tank just to be safe.

Oh and always use separate tanks, because they spread diseases. It's far better to spend the extra $10.00 or whatever it is on an extra 10 gallon aquarium. And a firebellied toad can climb anything. I know this from experience. As do many of the people on this forum.

Knot Jul 04, 2003 01:11 AM

I think you already read about firebellied toads being toxic...otherwise, you wouldn't be telling us you think that it could die or not swallowing the toad. You just want us to tell how to get the toad out of the pac-man. Do some research before you buy the animals!!!

Knot Jul 04, 2003 01:25 AM

We have that problem at the Star Trek board, too, where he posts a bunch of ludricrous everyday.

amazinglyricist Jul 04, 2003 01:27 AM

This person is obviously looking for help, not a scolding. You are only making matters worse by only telling the person that tehy screwed up. You need to explain how to solve the problem. This person needs help no put down.

cheshireycat Jul 04, 2003 01:33 AM

Okay, check it out, K&K...

Not that I want to play the frog police or anything, but this person came here, not because they needed to research more about the poisons in a fire bellied toad, but because they have a problem and need some help in dealing with it. It doesn't help if you just criticize this person and offer no advice, so maybe you should keep all of that to yourselves?

Seriously, I'd like to know if you can offer any information to this person without attacking them. They made a mistake and that's it. It's done, and they're freaking out. Does anyone have an idea on how to HELP?

cheshireycat Jul 04, 2003 01:34 AM

You know what, my post was targeted more towards the second K poster than the first, because of what they said. So, let me just correct that.

kungfu28181 Jul 04, 2003 11:51 AM

I don't think I was that mean...

cheshireycat Jul 14, 2003 03:02 AM

You're right... that's why I said about the latter of the Ks being the one I really was targeting. Sorry.

amazinglyricist Jul 04, 2003 01:41 AM

Ok see if you have a pair of needlenose pliars around and open them in the frogs mouth to get the firebellied toad out. Or try a spoon turned upside down. The firebellied toad is definately going to die, if it's not already so don't worry about it, just make sure you get it out of the frogs mouth.

amazinglyricist Jul 04, 2003 01:44 AM

Oh yeha this is a 2 man operation, you'll need to hold the frog in your hand while you use whatever to pry it's mouth open. And you will need someone to pull the other frog out.

ginevive Jul 05, 2003 06:00 AM

You should never ever put a horned frog in with a fbt! I would go back to that pet store if the frog does die and demand a refund. they gave you false info and they should know better if they sell horned frogs. the frog might not make it because of the poisons in the fbt, i would do everything possible to get the thing out of the frogs mouth if possible. there is a slim chance the frogs' digestive system can break down the toad, but i would be worried. put the frog into a shallow, small tank with water up to its elbows, changed daily, this can help dilute any poisons in the frog.

ginevive Jul 05, 2003 06:07 AM

If this is in fact what happened, you need to get some research before you buy a frog. Any horned frog book will tell you that these are frogs with large appetites and will go after anything moving. frog needs a seperate enclosure, not any way in which it can get to eat a fbt in an adjoining tank.

My PacMan doesn't seem to get enough food these days either. She went through a spell of not eating for about 4 months. I changed her cage to have mostly rock, with a tank heater underneath. On the other end of the cage is a little tank of water for her to go splashing in. Ever since she warmed up, she hasn't stopped eating. She is now 5 inches in diameter and eating live baby rats. This holds her for about a week. She has been through crickets, goldfish, pinky mice, full grown mice and now the baby rats. I understand they can get up to 7 inches in diameter, and weigh up to a pound. At 4.99 a rat, I hope she doesn't move up to larger rats. I will go broke!!! Maybe I can feed her the kids if they misbehave! *giggle*

amazinglyricist Jul 11, 2003 12:05 AM

Rodents aren't good for frogs, they cause fat buildups and make them go blind. I know a lot of people are against goldfish, but try those if your frog is hungry feeder goldfish don't usually cost much.

apita Jul 11, 2003 07:41 PM

But goldfish give her gas.... any other suggestions? And how do you tell if the frog has gone blind?
